What is Botox?

Botox is a prescription medication injected just under the skin with a very fine needle. It blocks nerve impulses to facial muscles and thereby decreases fine lines and wrinkles. Dr. Downie explains the process this way, “If you don’t crease the envelope (the forehead, between the eyes, and at the outer corners of the eyes) by tensing those muscles, you won’t develop a deep line in the skin. You won’t look angry, stressed, or tired when you are actually happy.”

Where can Botox be used?

Botox can be used in almost every area of the face, including frown lines on the forehead, crow’s feet, and other facial lines and wrinkles. It can also be used to decrease sweating under the arms and on the hands and feet.

Other uses of Botox include keeping your smile level by not allowing the corners of your lips to descend into a frown with age. It is also FDA-approved for migraine headaches and can be used to treat TMJ (pain in the jaw) and smooth the outline of a bulky jaw.

How is the procedure performed?

Treatments take only a few minutes. Patients sit in the treatment chair as they receive fast, gentle injections of Botox to address the problem areas. Topical numbing paste is offered and available for this and other neuromodulators and fillers at Image Dermatology.

What can I expect after the procedure?

Results begin to show in three to five days and last about three to four months or longer. Some slight bruising can occur, but it is minor and temporary and easily camouflaged with makeup.

BOTOX: Your Questions Answered

Can Botox make me look completely frozen?

Not at all! A skilled practitioner like Dr. Jeanine Downie of image Dermatology® P.C. has the experience to administer Botox in a way that softens lines while still maintaining natural movement.

Is Botox only for wrinkles?

Absolutely not! Beyond smoothing out crow’s feet and forehead lines, Botox can treat excessive sweating, migraines, and even help slim down a bulky jawline. It can help to decrease the pain and discomfort of TMJ, and can also be used to reduce fine lines around the mouth known as smoker’s lines, or to treat a gummy smile. When injected into the hairline, Botox can decrease your sweating in your hairline so you can keep your blowout longer. It was approved for many other medical purposes before it was approved for cosmetic use.

Will I see results immediately?

Not quite, but almost. While fillers can give you instant volume, Botox takes a little patience. It will typically take between two days to two weeks for the results to be noticeable in most patients. The reward is worth it, allowing patients to feel more confident in their appearance.

Do Botox injections hurt?

Surprisingly, not as much as one would suspect. The needles used for Botox are super fine, and most of our patients at image Dermatology® P.C. say it feels like a tiny pinch, if anything. It can sting a little, but we can use a topical numbing paste to help ease any discomfort our patients have. Plus, the whole process is so quick. You will be in and out before you can develop nervous energy about your upcoming procedure.

Is there an ideal age to start Botox?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. Some of our patients start in their late 20s or early 30s to prevent wrinkles from forming, while others wait until their 40s or beyond to treat existing lines that have developed. It depends on your goals; a good consultation can help you decide what is right for you.

Can Botox affect my emotions?

Botox does not affect emotions; it restricts facial movements linked to expressing them. You will not look fake or frozen. Instead, most of our patients who undergo Botox enjoy feeling fresher and more confident in their appearance, while still being able to feel and express their emotions with facial movements.

How long does Botox really last?

Typically, Botox lasts three to four months on most patients. Specific factors like metabolism, lifestyle, and the treatment area can all affect longevity. Dr. Downie and her team strongly recommend that patients schedule follow-up visits at least every three to four months to maintain effectiveness.
