What is Juvederm?

Juvederm is a type of dermal filler that contains hyaluronic acid. Its smooth texture makes it ideal for enhancing different areas of the face, such as the lips, cheeks, nasolabial folds, temples, chin, and even the backs of the hands.

Dr. Downie was involved in the initial Juvederm clinical trials. She previously had extensive experience with collagen injections and was excited to offer this better option to patients when it became available.

How dermal fillers are administered

Juvederm contains hyaluronic acid that closely resembles natural substances found in your body, eliminating the need for an allergy test before treatment. However, to reduce the risk of bruising, you should avoid vitamin E, fish oil supplements, and aspirin prior to injections.

Over two decades of experience in cosmetic dermatology, Dr. Jeanine B. Downie combines medical expertise with an artistic eye to help you achieve a refreshed and youthful appearance. Let’s help you put your best face forward.

At your first appointment, your makeup is removed. While you look into a mirror, she watches how your face animates as you talk, smile, and laugh. This attention to detail helps her understand your concerns and where injections will be most helpful. She uses a topical numbing paste before injection for patient comfort.

The injection process takes five to thirty minutes, depending on the number of syringes needed. Treatment is well tolerated, and Juvederm XC (for eXtra Comfort) contains lidocaine for a more comfortable experience.

DR DOWNIE DOES JUVEDERM VOLUMA FOR JANET'S 60TH BIRTHDAY PRESENT

The Voluma XCTM Process
Once any bacteria on the face is wiped off with alcohol, Dr. Jeanine Downie proceeds to insert the Voluma filler. Having used it herself, Dr. Downie describes it as having an immediate effect. The patient is a staff member who has undergone numbing for two hours the procedure is done.

“So I’m cleaning off the face with Hibiclens. This is to make sure that there are no extra bacteria on the face. This is after I’ve already cleaned it with alcohol. Janet has lost how much weight?”

[Patient]: “27 pounds.”

“27 pounds. Some of it unintentionally from her face. So we need to do filler. Smile. Now relax. She’s a great patient. This is Voluma. It’s what I have in my cheeks. It’s instant. You took digital pictures of her before, right? Good. How are we doing, Janet?”

[Patient]: “Good.”

“Still speaking to me? That’s good, because she works for me. She has to be able to speak to me, otherwise it would be really bad. Janet’s worried about bruising. She’s been numbing for 17, almost 18 hours. We’re joking. She’s numb for two hours. She’s a good patient. She makes me look good. She doesn’t bruise right away, which is sweet and thoughtful of her.”

And Janet’s going to be 60 in a month. Shhh… don’t tell her. So We’re doing this for her 60th birthday present ’cause we love her. She’s worked at Image for 700 years. She’s a good patient. Now look at the one side. The cheeks picked up some. Now look it over here a little bit over in here. And then the other side. We need to do a little something, something there. We can’t leave her lop-sided. Maybe if she was one of my brothers, I would do that to her. But she’s Janet. I can’t do that. OK.”

Recovery time

There’s minimal downtime – you may get on with your day immediately after a Juvederm treatment. Just remember to eat lots of pineapple to decrease bruising and ensure a smoother outcome. You can get back to your activities right away and there may be minimal bruising or swelling.

Potential complications and risks

Injection of dermal fillers is a medical procedure that should be administered by or under the direct supervision of a physician, preferably a board-certified dermatologist. As with any medical treatment, there are risks. Bruising, tenderness, or swelling can occur at injection sites, but those side effects are generally mild and resolve within a few days. Before treatment, Dr. Downie and her physician assistant will talk with you about the potential for more serious complications. They are rare but can occur in patients who take blood-thinning medications, have suppressed immune systems, or have severe allergies.

What is Juvéderm? is Juvéderm the filler you are looking for? Watch this video to learn more about Juvéderm as Dr. Jeanine Downie from Image Dermatology ® P.C. explains.

What is Juvéderm?
I was involved in some of the initial trials for Juvéderm Ultra Plus, which is one of their premier products. Juvéderm is another hyaluronic acid-based filler.

Hyaluronic acid is a gel-based substance that is found in your elbows, knees, and all your joints. Typically, one is not allergic to it at all.

Is Juvéderm reversible?
It is fully reversible through something called Hylenex or Vitrase in case somebody has an issue or needs a little melted.

What are the areas Juvéderm can be used in?
Juvéderm XC is one of those products where it can be used all over the place. A lot of my patients put a little on their foreheads. The forehead goes flat as you start to get older. They have me put a little bit of Juvéderm XC in here as well.

Other places you can do Juvéderm XC is in the tail of the eyebrow, to pick up the cheeks and on nasolabial folds. I also have used Juvéderm XC very off label in the nose for what I call a liquid nose job or liquid nose lift.

I have injected a gentleman’s nose with filler on the Today’s Show to make his nose look less dented. The filler in the nose can last upwards of 12 – 24 months.

PATIENT QUESTIONS

IS JUVEDERM SAFE

Yes. It is approved by the FDA for treatment of moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles. Dr. Downie and her team are trained and experienced in the use of dermal fillers, including Juvederm.

CAN PATIENTS WITH ETHNIC SKIN TONES GET JUVEDERM TREATMENT?

Yes. Clinical studies show no increased risk of pigmentation problems or scarring in patients with richly pigmented skin.

IS THE IMPROVEMENT PERMANENT?

No. You’ll see enhancement right away, and since hyaluronic acid holds many times its own weight in water, the results of Juvederm continue for up to six months. Most patients are so thrilled with their new look that they schedule regular upkeep appointments.

Can Juvederm be used to improve the appearance of scars?

The most common place at image Dermatology® P.C. where Juvederm is used is for the lips. Dr. Jeanine Downie uses Juvederm on her own lips and on those of many of her patients, too. It enhances the volume and gives natural-looking results as it rehydrates the lips.

How does Juvederm differ from other dermal fillers?

Juvederm is composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps retain moisture and add volume to the skin. Its smooth consistency provides a natural look and feel, a key differentiator from other fillers. Dr. Downie customizes treatments based on a patient’s unique goals to achieve the most natural and harmonious results.

Is Juvederm only for the face?

While Juvederm is primarily used for facial rejuvenation, Dr. Downie states it can also enhance other areas, such as adding volume to aging hands or improving skin hydration in specific areas. At image Dermatology® P.C., each treatment is tailored to address your individual aesthetic concerns, whether for the face or other parts of the body. It can also be used to re-inflate sagging earlobes and horizontal neck lines.

What happens if you choose not to repeat Juvederm injections once the results fade?

Once the effects of Juvederm fade, the treated area gradually returns to its pre-treatment appearance. Hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary, so there’s no long-term commitment unless you choose to maintain the results. Returning to a natural look is always an option.

Can you get Juvederm injections if you plan to lose weight?

Dr. Downie considers factors like lifestyle changes and weight goals when developing a definitive treatment plan to ensure lasting, balanced results. Juvederm, like all of the fillers Dr. Downie uses in her office, can enhance your natural facial and/or body aesthetic while you are losing weight. She strongly recommends that you do Juvederm throughout the course of weight loss to maintain your facial volume. It does not hurt the effectiveness of Juvederm in losing weight.

How is pain managed during Juvederm treatments?

We emphasize patient comfort during every procedure. Most Juvederm products contain lidocaine, a numbing agent, to reduce discomfort during injection. Additionally, Dr. Downie and her image Dermatology® P.C. team often use topical numbing creams or ice to maximize patient comfort.

How does lifestyle affect the longevity of Juvederm results?

Factors, including increased sun exposure, smoking, and hydration levels, can affect how long Juvederm results last. Dr. Downie recommends practicing good skin care habits, like wearing sunscreen daily, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to prolong the effects of the treatment. Smoking, vaping, and tanning beds–even smoking weed–can impact any filler that is used on the face and body. Dr. Downie recommends that patients curtail these habits to improve their longevity and the results of Juvederm injections. At image Dermatology® P.C., patients are also provided with personalized aftercare tips for optimal results.

Dr. Downie takes great pride in turning back the hands of time for her patients. Are you considering Juvederm or other injectables? Contact her today at (973) 509-6900 to schedule a consultation in her Montclair office.
