Doctor explains the Botox procedure for wrinkles
With over 7 million treatments in the United States in 2016, Botox is one of the most commonly requested minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. Botox is a neuromodulator that relaxes the facial muscles. When performed by a doctor, Botox is an effective treatment for fine lines and wrinkles. Located in Montclair, NJ, Dr. Jeanine Downie offers treatments to reduce the signs of aging.
There is no right age.
Constant use of our facial muscles, smiling, and frowning, can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles. The muscles are overused. Botox relaxes the muscles and softens the appearance of the lines.
Botox is an effective treatment for adult men and women. Some patients choose to use Botox as a preventative treatment to treat lines and wrinkles before they are fully visible. Others choose to wait until their lines are more prominent. Botox successfully treats your unwanted lines. Over time, your body becomes used to the treatment and needs less Botox to achieve the desired results.
Dr. Downie has been using Botox since the age of 30. She encourages patients to come in when they first start noticing fine lines and wrinkles. It is easier to treat the signs of aging when there are only fine lines and wrinkles. When patients wait, they get deeper lines and wrinkles and need to be treated with Botox, fillers, and lasers.

What to expect
Once you have decided to seek treatment whether preventative or restorative, schedule a consultation with Dr. Downie. During your consultation, discuss your medical history including any experience with Botox or injectables as well as your expectations for the treatment of your lines. You may be asked to squint or make specific expressions. This shows Dr. Downie the exact location and depth of your lines. This helps determine how much Botox to use. Botox can be used to address lines in the following areas:
- Crow’s feet
- The lines between your eyebrows
- Forehead lines
- Lines around the mouth
- Lines on the neck
Botox is also used to treat clenched jaws (TMJ) and for hyperhidrosis (underarm sweating).
Patients easily tolerate Botox injections. Botox is injected using a very fine needle through quick tiny pinpricks. The procedure is performed by your doctor in as little as 10-15 minutes. The only evidence of your treatment may be redness or possible bruising at the injection site. Over the course of a week, patients start to notice gradual softening of their lines. Results typically last 3-6 months.
