DERMATOLOGIST ADVICE FOR AGING SKIN

From searching the Internet to perusing magazine articles, men and women often seek the answer to one question: How do I reverse the signs of aging skin? Regardless of your age, there is always an opportunity to improve your habits. Dr. Jeanine Downie, Board-certified dermatologist and founder of image Dermatology ® P.C., in Montclair, New Jersey, provides the following advice:

AVOID OR QUIT SMOKING

Smoking advertisements may show attractive men and women pursing their lips to cigarettes and enjoying life; however, tobacco can wreak havoc on the skin and overall health. Nicotine in cigarettes can narrow the blood vessels in the top layers of the skin. When blood flow is impaired, the skin receives less oxygen and nutrients. Dr. Downie recommends no smoking, vaping, smoking weed, or smoking hookah. All of these types of smoking decrease the oxygen supply to the face and damage collagen and elastin. This, in turn, leads to premature wrinkling and sagging of the skin. See your doctor to help with quitting immediately to live longer and look better!

STAY CLEAR OF TANNING BEDS

Darkening the pigment of skin can lure Americans to tanning salons across the country. However, this method for achieving bronze skin can be detrimental to your health. Tanning beds can age your skin significantly and increase your risk of skin cancer. If you desire a sun-kissed glow for a special event, consider using a topical self-tanning agent recommended by Dr. Downie.

If you're looking for advice on anti- aging, this video is for you. Dr. Downie talks about treatments and advice no matter your age.

Hi, I’m Dr. Jeanine Downie, my practice in Montclair, New Jersey, is image Dermatology ® P.C., and I am a cosmetic dermatologist, and today I want to advise you on aging skin.

What steps can you take to reverse the signs of aging?

I tell everybody the same thing. You have to start wearing sunblock at an early age.

Now, if you are wearing sunblock every day, that’s the first key step in anti-aging.

There are a lot of different procedures and products that we recommend. In your 20s, it’s more of using sunscreen, Glycolic acid to lightly exfoliate your skin, and using retinoid on your skin once or twice a week to decrease fine lines wrinkles and build collagen.

In the 30s, use growth factors like the TNS ® Advanced+ Serum and use many different products like the Sente Dermal Repair that helps to even your skin tone out. Many people start using Botox by the time they’re 30. I know I certainly did.

I tell people that I will design an anti-aging treatment regimen for you that we can proceed with regardless of your age. Yes, you can still anti-age in your 60s 70s, and in your 80s, you can still anti-age then.

What habits to avoid to reduce anti-aging?

Habits to avoid; no smoking, no tanning, no smoking weed, and no vaping.

I tell my patients that they need to exercise a minimum of four times a week.

Eat a lot of brightly colored fruits and vegetables, as those are some great things in slowing down the aging process and getting sleep.

What’s the ideal age to start anti-aging treatments?

The ideal age to start anti-aging treatments is when you’re a child.

So those are my comments on anti-aging. It’s something I’m passionate about and specialized in.

WEAR SUNSCREEN

There are several ways the sun can affect the skin. Over time, the ultraviolet rays can damage skin fibers called collagen and elastin. When they break down, the skin can lose its elasticity and begin to sag. Therefore, wearing sunscreen as soon as you step outside is critical. Think of sunscreen as your shield against aging skin. Regardless of ethnic background or the temperature outside, we recommend everyone wear broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 daily. This helps prevent wrinkles and fine lines from making an early debut and can keep the skin looking youthful.

KEEP SKIN HYDRATED

Youthful skin can be supple and firm. However, when skin does not contain enough water, it can lose its elasticity and begin to sag. Therefore, keeping skin moisturized is another way to avoid the signs of aging. It starts with your daily routine. Choose a gentle cleanser over soap when bathing, and use a moisturizer after a bath or shower. When outside, wear a scarf and gloves to protect your skin in dry, frigid temperatures.
