How INTRAcel works

INTRAcel therapy is a minimally invasive skincare technology that combines fractional radiofrequency (RF) therapy with microneedling to gently and effectively stimulate collagen remodeling in the skin for long-lasting, incredible results.

  • Radiofrequency energy reduces bacteria and your skin’s production of sebum to combat active acne breakouts, and promotes your skin’s natural production of youth-promoting collagen and elastin, which helps resurface and tighten the skin in addition to reducing the appearance of acne scars
  • Microneedling harnesses your body’s natural healing powers by creating thousands of micro-injuries in the skin through ultra-fine needles; these injuries stimulate the skin to naturally repair and rejuvenate itself through a rush of health-promoting molecules and collagen formation in the skin

When used together in INTRAcel therapy, the tips of the microneedles are insulated and deliver radiofrequency energy deeper within the skin, where it can take effect beneath the surface for more dramatic skin rejuvenation and reduction in acne scarring than if microneedling or RF therapy were used alone.

How the treatment is done

First, we will apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment area so that you are comfortable throughout the duration of the procedure. After the anesthetic has taken effect, we will gently perform the treatment by slowly passing the INTRAcel device over your skin. With each pass, we will pause so that the needles can penetrate the skin and the RF energy can be delivered to the targeted tissues, and several passes may be completed for optimal results. You will likely feel a slight prickling sensation from the needles and some heat from the RF energy, but your skin will be cooled throughout the treatment and the sensations from the device are typically well-tolerated.

What to expect after treatment

What to expect after treatment in Montclair NJ area

INTRAcel treatment is highly targeted and specific, so it does not affect the surrounding tissues. Healing times are typically rapid because the treatment is designed to create microscopic injuries from which your body can recover quickly. The typical downtime is one to three days.

Immediately after the treatment is over, you will likely experience a minor amount of bleeding in the areas that the needles penetrated, but this subsides quickly. Your skin may also feel like it was sunburned and appear red for a short time after the treatment is complete. Some swelling may occur, but typically resolves within one to two days. Dr. Downie will discuss the possible side effects with you prior to treatment and give you advice on how to manage them should they occur.

Many patients see results such as smoother and firmer skin after just one treatment, but because collagen remodeling takes time, you will likely see continual improvement over the course of about six months, and will achieve the best results after a series of treatments. Dr. Downie will evaluate your skin and talk with you about your goals and preferences to determine the ideal number of treatments for your specific needs. Typically, at least four to eight treatments that are spaced one month apart are recommended.
