Dr. Downie began researching this technique in October 2010 and using and lecturing on it in January 2011. Her enthusiasm is derived from first-hand experience. She was forced to reduce her own physical activities following a knee injury in December 2010, and with holiday eating, found herself adding pounds. She was pleasantly amazed at how effectively Exilis melted her “love handles.” Exilis is an innovative fat melting and tissue tightening device for the face and body. Although Dr. Downie has used radiofrequency devices for skin tightening and fat melting in the past, she was not satisfied with the results. This new technology has changed cosmetic dermatology forever!

Dr Downie - Fat Melting

Dr Downie - Fat Melting
A non-invasive procedure is anyone’s preference to solving any health related issue. Dr. Downie discusses this exclusive body shaping and contouring instrument that she recommends and has seen many of her patients fall in love with. Dr. Downie’s patient discusses her journey with the fat melting technology, and how even though she is not a viable candidate for fat reduction surgery she can still work on having any excess fat dealt with by this non-invasive procedure.

“The minute patients hear that they don’t have to get cut, and they don’t have to get necessarily anesthetized, and they will see results, they’re interested in learning more. So I’ve had people literally walk in off the street to make appointments that were never my patients before. The machine, I feel, is at a cost where you can recover the cost of the machine within three to four months of great internal marketing and that’s before you even put an ad in the newspaper, so I think it’s well-worth it in terms of your bottom line.

“With this body-shaping device, what I’m finding is that patients move from me doing their outer thigh, then I’m doing their arms, then I’m doing their mother’s chin, then I’m doing their neighbor’s neck. So it’s the type of thing that builds, that people like, and I’ve had many, many patients come back in. My patient that’s had the most treated has had four separate areas treated, and next month she’s going to have her fifth area treated, so she’s thrilled with this device.

“So you have had four treatment sessions a little over six months ago and you just want to do a little bit more jeuge and get it tightened up a little bit more before the holidays?”

[Patient]: “I got the Exilis treatment before I did the four sessions and had great results. But now I’m here for maintenance, and I also have a trip coming up where I will be in a bathing suit, so I figured it’s the right time to come.”

“What we did with you before was we melted a little bit of fat but you really didn’t have a lot of fat. So it’s really about tightening after your two kids.”

[Patient]: “What I like about the Exilis is that, because I’m not really a candidate for a tummy tuck or any type of surgery but yet I realistically have that excess skin and flab on my stomach from having children. So this is a great alternative. It’s perfect, because it’s just really tightening. I’m not looking to lose weight or anything.”

“The Exilis uses focused Radiofrequency and they have energy flow technology, which is the ideal combination of heating and cooling so that way it’s extremely safe.

[Patient]: “What I like about it for me, because I’ve got, I’ve had two kids and the elasticity of my stomach. No matter how much I work out, I still have that sagging in certain areas of my stomach, and I’m not a candidate for liposuction or anything like that I don’t think. And this is perfect, because I really noticed a difference. Because it’s noninvasive, I really feel safe about it. And Dr. Downie explained the technology and it seems state-of-the-art and it seems like something that I feel like a lot of people have been waiting for in order to tighten their skin without having to go through some type of surgery.

“What I like about this is it’s got what we call Collagen Refill Technology, so that’s what is tightening you inside. So the heat is going deep down kind of to your basically lower levels of your epidermis, higher levels of your dermis, and it’s remodeling your collagen. So that’s how you’re getting the contraction and it treats your skin laxity. It’s amazing technology.

[Patient]: “A big difference is when I sit down if I see a little bit of flab over the top of my pants, and I noticed a difference in that. And then after the fourth treatment, I really noticed a difference. It was well-worth it.”

The selected treatment zones are covered with a protective gel to allow the handpiece to glide smoothly over the skin. The device delivers radiofrequency energy to the deeper layers of skin, speeding up metabolic activity and breaking apart the fat cells. At the same time, collagen production is stimulated, improving skin texture and laxity. Although some mild discomfort may be experienced, most patients say the results are worth it! The device’s temperature sensor allows precise delivery of sufficient energy to achieve results without significant pain. Many patients compare it to a hot stone massage.

What are the non-invasive fat melting procedures done at your practice?

With regard to non-invasive fat melting procedures there are many things to consider. There are different types of machines but at Image Dermatology I like the Exilis.

What does Exilis do?

Exilis means ‘thin’ in Latin. It is for melting the fat and tightening the skin on the :

  • Stomach
  • Back
  • The buttocks
  • The thighs
  • And the backs of the arms

What is a Vanquish machine used for?

I have the Vanquish, which is for people that are bigger or thinner. I call it the ‘human toaster’ as my patients sit underneath it, while it melts the fat in a 45-minute treatment session. Sometimes I combine that with the Exilis” “Who is a good candidate for non-Invasive fat melting procedure?

We are looking for people who want to lose inches, lose fat and who are willing to drink a lot of water. If you are well hydrated, you can get rid of the fat faster than when you are not well hydrated.

So, the type of person we are looking for is somebody like:

A) Can afford to come in every two weeks probably sometime we see people once a month.

B) That can spend an hour to an hour and a half in our office, because we hook you up to one machine and then typically, we hook you up to a separate machine for optimal treatment results.

We actually combine machines so they are paying for one machine when they are actually getting the benefit of two.”

How do you monitor progress of the treatment?

We look at what your goals are – we look at your stomach, we photograph your stomach, measure your stomach and weigh you. We look at objective goals to where we are going to be 4 treatment sessions later, 6 treatment sessions later and 8 treatment sessions later.

My patients are delighted and they like being accountable. We keep track of where patients are on every treatment session, so that we can make proper progress and move forward together.
