Be aware of the cost of Fraxel Restore in inexperienced hands

Paul Neal Adair (“Red” to his friends) once said, “If you think a professional is expensive, wait ’til you try an amateur.” As an innovator in the hazardous occupation of oil well firefighter, Red appreciated the value of specialized expertise. That sentiment is apt in dermatology, as well. In unseasoned hands or an unethical practice, the results can cost your appearance or your health. In qualified, experienced, gentle hands and a practice that gives patient safety and comfort top priority, the results are stunning. Dr. Jeanine Downie and her team at image Dermatology ® P.C. bring that level of care to patients in the Glen Ridge area, with competent Fraxel re:store laser skin rejuvenation.

Fraxel re:store treatment

Fraxel re:store is a non-ablative laser that targets deep skin layers without harming the complexion’s surface. Ablative simply means to remove tissue, so a non-ablative therapy does not erode the protective outer layer of skin. Instead, Fraxel re:store sends micro-pixels of light through the epidermis, stimulating your body’s own healing processes to trigger production of new collagen bundles. Collagen is a lattice of resilient protein fibers that give firmness and structure to skin.

This method is safe for all skin types and all areas of the body. Dr. Downie uses Fraxel re:store for:

  • Remediation of acne and surgical scars.
  • Improvement in wrinkles around the eyes.
  • Lightening of age spots and other unwanted skin pigmentation including melasma.
  • Removal of actinic keratoses; precancerous lesions (not covered by insurance).
  • Treatment of stretch marks.
  • Tightening and decreasing the lines around the neck.

Proper treatment with Fraxel re:store has minimal side effects (some patients experience temporary stinging, pinkness, swelling, flaking, or tanning), and essentially no downtime. You may wear cosmetics and return to normal activities right away one day later. Because of the moderate nature of this therapy, several sessions may be required for optimal results.

Why competent care is critical

Any type of laser works on the principle of powerfully focused light energy. The practitioner’s expertise in calibrating the laser’s intensity and administering treatment appropriately is essential for patient safety and satisfactory results.

A number of other factors must be considered for safe, effective treatment without scarring or medical complications.

  • How richly pigmented is the patient’s skin?
  • Does the patient tan?
  • Does the patient smoke?
  • Is the patient prone to cold sores?
  • What type of scarring is present?
  • What region of the face or body is being treated?
  • What aftercare procedures and products should be recommended?
  • What skincare products should be avoided immediately after treatment?
  • Will the patient comply with sunscreen requirements?

At some practices, a nurse or trained assistant handles laser resurfacing. Dr. Downie is a Board-certified dermatologist with a wealth of specialized training in laser techniques for all ethnicities. She performs Fraxel re:store procedures personally for image Dermatology ® P.C. patients.
