Is Voluma an alternative to surgery for chin augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure that recontours the chin or enhances its size. This is typically accomplished through an incision inside the mouth or under the chin on the outside. A pocket is created in front of the chin bone, underneath the muscles. An implant made of silicone or other material is inserted into the pocket. This surgery carries the usual risks of anesthesia and infection. Most patients are publicly presentable in about ten days, and fully healed within three to four months. Voluma is a subcutaneous (deep tissue) filler recently introduced into the well known family of Juvéderm products. It contains hyaluronic acid (HA) which occurs naturally in the body. The HA in Voluma is not derived from animal sources, so there is little risk of allergic reaction. HA captures and holds many times its own weight in water. That means that it adds instant volume and maintains it for up to two years.

This smooth gel formulation is approved by the FDA to restore lost volume in the cheek area.
