The impressive history of Juvéderm fillers

Today’s dermatology patient has many non-surgical options for treatment of fine lines, wrinkles, folds, creases, and lost facial volume. Many dermal fillers are available today because of the progressive aesthetic medical researchers at Allergan. They are manufacturers of the Juvéderm family of dermal fillers. Dr. Jeanine Downie of image Dermatology ® P.C. in Montclair, New Jersey is proud to offer these treatments to patients throughout the Glen Ridge area.

Juvéderm’s history

In 1934 Columbia University medical researchers John Palmer and Karl Meyer isolated a curious substance from the eye of a cow. They discovered that it had some amazing properties, including the ability to grab and hold many times its own weight in water. That made this compound ideal for maintaining skin volume and suppleness. They called their discovery hyaluronic acid.

HA has been used extensively in the food industry and medical field. Its first application for soft tissue augmentation took place in Europe in 1996.

Allergan developed a laboratory-produced, biocompatible HA with almost no risk of allergic reaction or rejection. With it they formulated a safe, effective dermal filler for immediate improvement in moderate to severe folds from nose to mouth. After extensive testing and clinical use in Europe, Juvéderm received FDA approval in June 2006. Since that time it has gained incredible popularity with thousands of procedures performed annual in the United States.
