Fresh hope for acne scarring: Fraxel laser therapy

A single acne breakout can wreck your day – your plans to look perfectly groomed for a class, presentation, or big date. Scars left in the wake serve as daily reminders of flare-ups you’d rather forget. Facial hair for men and heavy makeup for ladies only hides the issue. Dr. Jeanine Downie of image Dermatology ® P.C. offers a long-term solution. Fraxel laser therapy for acne scarring is helping patients throughout the Essex Fells area love their formerly acne troubled complexions again.

The cause of acne scars

An acne pimple, papule, pustule, or cyst is an inflamed follicle or pore engorged with dead skin cells, excess oil, and bacteria. It swells and eventually ruptures, spreading infection that destroys nearby healthy tissue and leaving a wound in the skin. As with any wound, your body calls for extra production of collagen (a fibrous meshwork of protein) to help the skin knit and heal. Unfortunately, this “repair job” can be overzealous, pulling surface skin into depressed pits or creating raised scars that may be shiny or red.

Fraxel: A fresh approach to acne scar revision

Fractional laser therapy is an advanced method of breaking up and minimizing scar tissue left behind by acne. The Fraxel device sends 1,000 to 2,000 pulses of up to 250 microscopic beams of focused laser light into each square centimeter of skin. Treatment heats the dermis and epidermis for surface and deep cell remediation. Skin cells between the Fraxel beams are not affected, so healing is hastened.

Fraxel therapy is well tolerated by most patients. The image Dermatology ® P.C. team takes extra steps to ensure your comfort during treatment so that you feel only a warming sensation with minor stinging. Skin may be slightly swollen and reddish for few days, and will then flake. However, there is little or no discomfort after this gentle treatment and you may wear cosmetics right away.

As your glowing new complexion emerges, you notice that acne scarring is dramatically diminished. Most patients benefit from a series of Fraxel treatments, for additional improvement.
