The benefits of chemical peels

Humankind has appreciated the beauty of smooth, soft, even-toned, firm skin since ancient times. It is said that the legendary beauty, Cleopatra of Egypt, routinely bathed in milk to maintain the youthful appearance and texture of her skin. This is probably true, as milk bathing is a primitive form of a mild chemical peel, which evens out skin tone, improves fine lines, and encourages healthy cell rejuvenation.

There are many chemical peel formulas, which vary in strength and effects. Glycolic acid, a natural compound derived from sugar cane, is considered the mildest. This procedure is gentle and comfortable, achieving skin improvement with little to no downtime.

During the procedure
First, all cosmetic products are removed from the treatment area. Once the skin has been cleaned, a formula containing between 10 and 70 percent glycolic acid is applied. The strength of the formula will be chosen based on the desired results, and your skin type and sensitivity. It will remain on the skin for a predetermined length of time, and then neutralized and removed. You may feel mild tingling as the formula soaks into your skin, but it should not be painful. Moisturizer is applied after the procedure is completed.

After the procedure
You may notice some redness immediately following the procedure. It should fade within several hours, at which time you can apply cosmetics if you wish. It is important to use sun protection and avoid harsh skincare products after a chemical peel. The old, dry, tough cells have been removed and fresh, new, tender ones developed, making the skin more susceptible to damage.

Although mild chemical peels and other skin care treatments are frequently offered in spas, choosing a dermatology practice gives you the greatest range of options, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing a board-certified dermatologist is performing or overseeing all procedures.
