How to get the best results with Botox

Botox is a safe cosmetic injection, derived from diluted botulinum toxin, which is targeted at the muscles under the skin of your face and neck. Botox produces a controlled relaxing of these muscles to drastically reduce deep lines and wrinkles that are beginning to make their unwelcome appearance.

Dr. Jeanine Downie has been providing Botox wrinkle reducer treatments to valued patients since 1994. She advises patients to keep the following tips in mind when considering Botox therapy:

Know what you want to achieve. Before your procedure, be sure you communicate to your doctor the results you hope to attain. Injecting Botox is akin to an artist taking a brush to canvas palette, allowing a skilled doctor to deftly smooth frown lines, augment an eyebrow arch, or precisely soften the purse of a lip with minuscule adjustments to the location and depth of their syringe. Skill level is the difference between great, good, and mediocre Botox — the kind that that produces “frozen face.” Dr. Downie thoroughly understands facial anatomy so she can create the look you desire.

Choose a doctor you trust. Today, Botox can be offered through medi-spas and by clinicians with titles such as “skin care professional” or “injection specialist.” Ensure that your doctor is a board-certified dermatologist and uses only FDA-approved Botox injections at the recommended dosage concentrations. Dr. Downie’s experience places her in the top echelon of board-certified dermatologists in the United States. She is an early adopter of the injectable wrinkle reducer and regularly conducts trainings for American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Fillers and Injectables. She has written scientific papers and performed clinical trials on newer forms of botulinum toxin.

Begin Botox early. While Botox is effective at any age, results will be more significant when treatment starts just as wrinkles begin appearing. For example, a 69-year-old patient may require more Botox for a complete treatment plus supplemental fillers to attain the preferred level of skin smoothness; a 35-year-old may need just a light amount of Botox to erase tiny creases.

Timing is everything. -Botox is coined a “lunchtime procedure” since it usually takes less than half an hour to receive a standard treatment and there are virtually no side effects that limit you from resuming normal daytime activities. No exercising after Botox for six hours. However, if you are planning to have Botox in advance of a special event be advised that Botox takes up to two weeks to achieve the optimal effects. Some patients also report having minor swelling or slight bruising at the injection area for a few days. The lifetime of a Botox treatment lasts approximately 3-4 months. Subsequent treatments will need to be scheduled to maintain results.
